Partial gel is one of those soapmaking surprises that can confuse even experienced soapmakers. You cut into your loaf expecting a smooth, even color, only to discover a darker ring running through the center of the bars.
While partial gel is often considered a cosmetic problem, it isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, sometimes it can create beautiful effects that would be difficult to reproduce intentionally.
Understanding what partial gel is — and how to correct it if you want to — gives you much more control over the final look of your soap.
What Is Partial Gel in Soap?
Partial gel happens when only part of the soap loaf reaches gel phase during saponification. The center of the loaf naturally holds heat longer than the edges. If the center becomes warm enough to gel but the outer portions stay cooler, only the middle of the soap will gel.
When the soap is cut, you’ll usually see a darker, slightly translucent circle or oval in the center of the bar while the outside edges remain lighter and more opaque. This difference happens because gelled soap and ungelled soap reflect light differently.
Partial gel does not affect how the soap performs. It is strictly a visual difference.
Why Partial Gel Happens
Partial gel is caused by uneven temperatures within the soap loaf during saponification. Several factors can make this more likely:
- Moderate insulation
If the mold is insulated just enough to warm the center but not enough to heat the entire loaf evenly, the middle may gel while the edges stay cool. - Cool room temperatures
A cool environment can cause the outer edges of the mold to lose heat faster than the center. - Large loaf molds
The bigger the loaf, the easier it is for the center to retain heat longer than the outside. - Certain ingredients
Sugars, honey, milk, and some fragrance oils can generate additional heat during saponification, which may cause the center to gel before the rest of the soap catches up.
What Partial Gel Looks Like
Once you know what to look for, partial gel is easy to recognize. The gelled center often appears smoother and slightly darker, while the outer edges look lighter and more matte.
Common signs include:
- a darker circle in the center of the bar
- a visible ring or “bullseye” pattern
- a slightly more translucent texture in the gelled area
Partial Gel Isn’t Always a Problem
Many soapmakers try to avoid partial gel because they prefer a consistent color throughout the bar. But sometimes partial gel can produce unexpectedly beautiful results.
One of my favorite examples happened while working with Himalayan rhubarb root as a natural colorant. Rhubarb produces different shades depending on whether the soap gels or not. These flower soaps were made in cavity molds and went through a partial gel. Instead of creating a harsh ring, the gel phase created a soft gradient across the entire design.

The result was a beautiful shift from coral tones to soft pinks across the petals of the mold. I often call this my “best partial gel ever,” because the effect couldn’t have been designed more perfectly. Each of the colors you see here comes entirely from the gel phase interacting with the rhubarb.
This is a great reminder that partial gel can sometimes be used as a design element rather than something to avoid.
How to Prevent Partial Gel
If you prefer an even color throughout your soap, the key is managing temperature so the entire loaf behaves the same way. You can prevent partial gel by either encouraging full gel or preventing gel altogether. Some soapmakers keep the soap warm so the entire loaf gels evenly. Others place their molds in the refrigerator or freezer so the soap stays cool and never enters gel phase at all.

How to Fix Partial Gel After Cutting
Most soapmakers assume that once partial gel appears, there’s nothing you can do about it. But if you catch it early enough, it is often possible to correct it.
If you cut your soap and notice a partial gel ring, the bars may still be able to finish going through gel phase. This works best within the first day after making the soap, while saponification is still actively happening.
To fix partial gel, you can gently warm the freshly cut bars so the ungelled portions finish gelling. I simply stack two cafeteria trays with the soap in between and place heating pads on top, using the same setup I use when forcing gel during soapmaking.
This method is essentially a countertop version of CPOP… but done after the cut. As long as the soap is still fresh and not fully finished saponifying, the remaining portions of the soap can often complete gel phase and the ring will disappear. It’s a simple trick that many soapmakers don’t realize is possible.
Final Thoughts on Partial Gel
Partial gel happens when temperatures inside a soap loaf are uneven during saponification. The center of the soap gels while the edges remain cooler, creating a visible ring or color difference inside the bar.
While many soapmakers prefer to avoid it, partial gel is purely cosmetic and doesn’t affect how the soap performs.
Sometimes, as with the Himalayan rhubarb flower soaps, partial gel can even create beautiful natural gradients that would be difficult to reproduce intentionally.
And if partial gel does appear when you didn’t want it, freshly cut soap can often be gently warmed so the entire bar finishes going through gel phase.
