When it comes to handmade soaps, their unique characteristics not only provide a luxurious bathing experience but also require specific care. A crucial element of preserving the quality and extending the lifespan of your handmade soap is using a well-draining soap dish. Here’s why it’s important and how it relates to the nature of handmade soap, its glycerin content, and differences from melt and pour soaps.

Understanding Handmade Soaps and Glycerin

Handmade soaps are crafted through a process called saponification, where oils or fats are mixed with an alkali, typically lye, resulting in soap and glycerin. Unlike commercial soaps, handmade soaps retain this glycerin, which is a humectant that draws moisture from the air. This property makes handmade soaps exceptionally moisturizing for your skin.

The Role of Glycerin:

  • Moisturizing Properties*: Glycerin helps to keep your skin hydrated by pulling moisture into the outer skin layer.
  • Natural By-product: During the saponification process, glycerin forms naturally, making handmade soaps gentle and beneficial to the skin.
  • Sensitive Skin Friendly: With its natural composition, glycerin is ideal for people with sensitive skin, as it does not strip away natural oils.

*As a side note, I feel it’s important to point out the glycerin can also draw moisture out of your skin in dry climates. So, if you live in the desert don’t slather yourself with glycerin. It will suck the moisture out of your skin where there’s more moisture than in the air!

Why Use a Well-Draining Soap Dish?

The same glycerin that makes handmade soap so wonderful for your skin can also draw in moisture from its surroundings, causing the soap to become soft and mushy if left in standing water. A well-draining soap dish helps to prevent this, allowing your soap to dry between uses and ensuring it lasts longer.

Here are a few reasons you need a well-draining soap dish:

  1. Preserves Soap Consistency: By keeping it dry, the soap remains firm and holds its shape better.
  2. Prevents Waste: Soft, soggy soap can disintegrate quickly or become too gooey to use effectively, leading to unnecessary waste.
  3. Saves Money: Since the soap lasts longer when properly stored, you won’t have to replace it as often.
  4. Maintains Quality: Proper drainage ensures that the beneficial properties of the handmade soap remain intact.

A Quick Note on Handmade Soap vs. Melt and Pour Soap

While both types may be labeled as ‘handmade,’ there’s a distinct difference between traditional handmade soaps and melt and pour varieties.

Traditional Handmade Soaps:

  • Made from scratch using the saponification process.
  • Retain all the natural glycerin created during production.
  • Offer a rich, moisturizing experience due to the higher glycerin content.

Melt and Pour Soaps:

  • Consist of pre-made soap bases that are melted down, customized with fragrances or colors, then poured into molds.
  • Often have additives introduced to facilitate the melting and hardening processes.
  • May lack some of the moisturizing properties inherent in traditional handmade soaps.

Regardless of which type of soap you use and make (Cold Process, Hot Process, or Melt and Pour), you need a good soap dish!

My favorite soap dishes are the boardwalk style soap dishes from Howells Products. The custom ridges on these minimize the amount of soap that comes in contact with the surface and maximizes airflow. They really to extend the life of your soap!

And, Howells Products is a family owned business who works hard to support the soapy community. They even offered up a special coupon code for Soapy Friends!
