Why Cold Process Soap Crumbles When Cut:
Hard, brittle soap at the cutting stage usually traces back to your water content and fatty acid profile:

- Low Water Content (less than a 1.5:1 water-to-lye ratio) leads to faster set-up and a harder bar.
- High Saturated Fat Content (coconut, palm, tallow, etc.) makes a firmer soap that can turn brittle if not cut in time.

Crumbly soap that feels irritating or chalky could be lye heavy—meaning there’s excess sodium hydroxide in the final bar.

- Miscalculated oil or lye measurements

If you’re making hot process soap and it crumbles when you cut it, the cause is usually very different from cold process issues.
Why It Happens:
- The soap was overcooked, causing too much moisture to evaporate before pouring.

Is It Safe?
